Adaeze has spent thirty-one years being described, by everyone who knows her, as a good woman — the word arriving so often it has stopped sounding like praise and started sounding like an instruction.

A Good Woman follows one season in which that description starts costing more than it protects: a husband's failing business, a mother-in-law's escalating demands, a younger sister's refusal to play the role Adaeze played at her age. The novel doesn't argue that goodness is fake. It asks what a culture actually means when it calls a woman good, and who benefits from her believing it.

There's no rebellion arc here, no third-act walkout. Adaeze doesn't leave. What she does instead — quieter, and harder to forgive her for — is the real subject of the book.
