Womb for Hire follows Efosa, a surrogate carrying a child for a wealthy couple who treat the arrangement as a transaction and expect her to treat it the same way — until the pregnancy makes that impossible for reasons that have nothing to do with sentimentality and everything to do with what a body knows that a contract doesn't account for.

The novel refuses the two easy versions of this story: the exploitation narrative where Efosa is only a victim, and the miracle narrative where the pregnancy redeems everyone involved. Instead it stays close to the actual, uncomfortable economics — what it means to sell access to your body in a country with no safety net, and what it means to be the kind of person who can afford to buy it.

No one in this book is purely using or purely used. That's the point.
